As the years get on and the kids move on and you find yourself an empty nester, you may begin thinking about moving on from the family home and finding a small space for yourself. Downsizing is precisely this, trading big for small and decluttering your life. But how do you just get rid of items that have taken a lifetime to accumulate and just pack up and leave.
Well, no one said it was an easy process, though it’s a step in life that comes with many benefits and really allows people to live a little more. So where do you begin? A good place to start is maybe eBay, Gumtree or even an old fashion garage sale. Begin by selling off some of the items that aren’t coming with you, because once you start this process, it gets the ball rolling and the next thing you know you begin looking at new homes.
The next step would be to call some real estate agents over to assess the value of your property. It also helps to get a better understanding of the sales process and the duration to expect your property to go to market, sell and settle. This will allow you to gauge when you should start looking seriously at purchasing and give you a timeline to when you will start your new life.
Once the hunt for a suitable home begins, you must take in all the influences in your life to help with this decision. From your children to grandchildren, your friends or even different communities that you want to be in, figure out where you want to be close too, so you get the most out of your low maintenance lifestyle. It’s important that you make the move yours and based on your decisions, though part of that decision is what you want to fill your days with. The most important thing to remember is not to buy because someone else wants you close by, you’ll end up making another move a lot quicker than you expect too.
The low maintenance, lock up and leave lifestyle is not necessarily for everyone. Though in my experience, those who decide to make the move a little earlier in life, rather than waiting until you’re forced to make the decision, seem to make the most from the move. Whether it be sipping lattes with friends, going for walks or visiting the gym in a daily routine or jet setting around the world and soaking up every experience possible, downsizing has something for everyone.
