Finding a property to rent is harder than ever. The competition is so fierce, that just walking into open for inspections can be demoralising. But, there’s a few steps you can take to make you stand out from the crowd.

Now there isn’t any secret that we can give you to get ahead of the pack. But we can give you the basics to put your best foot forward when applying for a rental.

First things first, dress up! First impressions last and it makes a difference. We have to look at the overall picture and how you present in person as well as on paper counts. Don’t go over board, just take care with your presentation and that should do the trick.

Make sure you make yourself known. If there’s an opportunity, say hello to the agent(s) with a big smile, ask questions, once again if theirs an opportunity, but don’t definitely don’t beg or sleaze your way into a property. You generally go to the bottom of the pack.

Have your application ready to go and take the time to build a strong case for yourself. Include as much relevant documentation as possible and be quick to apply when you find the right place. If there’s any circumstances that need to be discussed outside what you provide, make sure you tell the agent your circumstances when you’re at the inspection and then follow up with an email reiterating what you talked about.

If you can get these basics right, then the only advice left, is to keep your fingers crossed and hope for the best. Good luck!
